Cradled in the hills of Barangay San Jose in Malaybalay City, just a few minutes drive from the national highway, is the famed Monastery of the Benedictine Monks. It is also popularly called the Monastery of the Transfiguration.
The monastery's most famous edifice is the magnificent pyramid chapel which was designed by the late National Artist Leandro Locsin. It is a popular destination for people who want to pray amidst the silent and serene environment and is also a perfect place for those who are seeking peace of mind and calmness of soul and spirit.
The chapel is also the top choice for church weddings because of its scenic location.
The Monastery of the Transfiguration is a community composed of monks who vowed to follow the Rule of St. Benedict by living a contemplative life in their quest for God. The community observes the traditional horarium which consists of prayer(seven times during the day), manual labor and spiritual reading.
Aside from prayer and spiritual reading, The Benedictine monks also spend their time farming rice, corn, peanuts, soya beans and coffee. The place is famous not only for the pyramid chapel but also for the Monks’ Blend Premium Coffee, Monks’ Peanut Butter, roasted peanuts, piniato (peanut brittle) and the now-disbanded Monastery’s Boys Choir who were once regarded as the Philippine’s best children’s choir.
Every Sunday, churchgoers can enjoy "Breakfast with the Monks" for P150.00 per head. The price may be a bit high for some but according to the monastery's website, transfiguration.ph, "it is really a very minimal fee, considering the abundant (and sometimes, regional) delights lovingly prepared by those blessed hands". Guests may also choose to stay overnight for P650.00/head and this will already cover dinner, breakfast before Mass, and brunch afterwards.
