The Old Atugan Highway in Impasug-ong, Bukidnon

The Old Atugan Highway in Impasug-ong, Bukidnon used to be the main highway where travelers from Cagayan de Oro going to Bukidnon, Davao or Cotabato normally passed. When Sayre Highway was opened and became the main road, the Atugan Highway somehow turned into a forgotten road as travelers don't have to pass along its route anymore. Because of this, the awesome sights that one can view when passing along the Old Atugan Road remain hidden to present day commuters.

Impasug-ong's rugged terrain is characterized by mountains, canyons and gorges

Last September 10, I had the rare opportunity to pass along the Old Atugan Road when I joined the 1st Impasug-ong Invitational Fun Run. With the 10-kilometer race route passing along this road, I took my camera with me while running so that I can capture the breathtaking scenery. Several times during my run I have to either stop or take a walk break not only to give my legs some rest, but also to take some descent shots of the beautiful sights I passed along.

This earthen jar, locally known as "banga", is the most famous landmark of the old Atugan Highway. Fresh spring water is channeled to the jar and on its ever flowing faucet is where local folks and travelers quench their thirsts.

The Old Atugan Road is mostly unpaved.

A beautiful morning in Impasug-ong.

Running with Impasug-ong mountains on the background. Awesome!

  7. Let it be a very old road, but it still has not lost its value as many people continue to use it and benefit from it.
